INTRODUCTION
The mapping of technical activities in Malakal is designed to carry out a research survey for finding the technical activities within area.
The primary objective for observation and documentation of the activities spotted.
These programs were carried on 28/03/2011 and 31/03/2011 respectively.
On 28/03/2011, the team managed to spotted nine technical activities sites.
1.building maintenance sites – 3
2.new construction sites – 3
3.material yards – 2
4.material shop – 1
On second trip was conducted on 31/03/2011 and we spotted seven technical activities sites and these sites comprised of the following.
1.building maintenance site – 1
2.new construction sites – 3
3.material store – 2
4.carpentry workshop – 1
OBSERVATION:
Our observation of the two trips of mapping the technical activities in Malakal went as follows:
1.The technical activities in malakal town are rarely located in comparison to other town in south Sudan.
2.Some of the technical activities spotted are on small scale that is the workers are very few and doing very little building maintenance.
3.Most of the building constructions activities have stopped.
4.We have observed very many buildings in the residential areas are collapsing and may need general maintenance.
5.We have observed that most of the technical activities are on metal work.
6.We have observed that the transportation means here is by horses and donkeys.
REFLECTION
After observation of the technical activities we have spotted and in comparison to reflection practice. The following are our reflections:
1.We reflection that there should be a problem for hindering technical activities in malakal and this requires consultation in the areas spotted.
2.We have seen buildings in the residential areas are collapsing and considering the landscape and type of the soil, the design of buildings need to be revised.
3.As we shall continue to carry the research in details; the reflection on why the traditional construction practice has overshadowed the modern construction skills shall be uncovered in the next stages.
4.We have reflected that fencing is built using bars and corrugated iron sheets because of the soil is not resisting compressive loads of brick or store walls.
I got some information when reading through your text. How can you related your observation and reflection to your own experience as professional builder?
